Knicks Poetry Slam

I was watching MSG (the Madison Square Garden channel) and they were showing the Knicks Poetry Slam. I had to find out what this program was about since I like poetry and its raw form spoken word. The Poetry slam was established in 2003 in order to help young kids to express themselves in positive ways through poetry in both written and spoken forms. The growth of this program allowed the New York Knicks and their partner Urban Word NYC to reach over 10,000 students providing them with information and other opportunities to better their chances to be successful. Some program consists of but is not limited to poetry slams, workshops, open audition for poetry and annual school visits.

For further information about the Knicks Poetry Slam or how to enter visit the official website KnicksPoetrySlam.com.

The programs sponsors are: New York Knicks, University of Wisconsin, Mercy College, Nike – Let Me Play, Hymowitz Children's Educational Foundation, Inc., The Joan Goldstein Education Foundation and New York Based Radio Stations 98.7 Kiss FM and Hot 97 FM.

The winners of the 2009 Poetry Slam had some really great work. They were as follows:

1st Place Janine Simon of Brooklyn won $10,000 towards her education, $25,000 in Nike branded gym equipment to donate to the school of her choice, a laptop, a printer and a session to customize her own NIKEiD shoes.

2nd Place Cynthia "Ceez" Keteku won $7,500 towards her education, a laptop, a printer and a session to customize her own NIKEiD shoes.

Inside the NBA - Rick Adelmen vs. Phil Jackson

I was conversing with Ellie at the end of the Lakers 89-79 Game 7 victory last night over the Rockets. I had was explaining to her how Rick Adelmen always seemed to lose to Phil Jackson. I remembered about the battles both coaches would have when Adelmen was the head coach of the Sacramento Kings and Jackson was head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. At that time both teams were powerhouses but the Lakers always steamrolled past the Kings. I was completely oblivious to the fact that Adelmen was the head coach of the Portland Trailblazer team that lost to Jackson's Chicago Bulls in the 1992 NBA Finals, back in the Michael Jordan era. However, Kenny Smith touches on all of this in this segment of Inside the NBA.

Sade - Nothing Can Come Between Us (80's Flashback)

Ladies and Gentlemen...Sade.

Total feat. Missy Elliott - Trippin' (90's Flashback)

There were so many hot female groups when I was coming up. What happened?

Timbaland feat. Jay-Z - Lobster & Scrimp (90's Flashback)

This is the 2nd major Jay-Z and Timbo collabo (the 1st being Nigga What, Nigga Who off of Jay-Z's Hard Knock Life album) which started a new era in Hip Hop two Legends joined forces.

Ruff Ryders - Ride or Die (90's Flashback)

I remember when I used to tape music videos and this was one that I would wait patiently to record. The Ruff Ryders definitely stole the show. The Lox & X were already taking over but this also marked the debut of both Eve and Drag-On.

Busta Rhymes - Tear Da Roof Off / Party Goin' On Over Here (90's Flashback)

Sick video you get two songs for the length of one. This was when I bumped Busta hard E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front was a classic album. Every song was tough. What can I say I'm a 90's Baby! Represent! Represent!

LL Cool J feat. Keith Murray, Prodigy, Fat Joe & Foxy Brown (90's Flashback)

OMG...Crazy song I used to bump this over and over. Once again everybody came correct on this track.

LL Cool J feat. Method Man, Redman, Canibus, DMX & Master P - 4,3,2,1 (90's Flashback)

Hot track, one of the greatest duo's leading off, Canibus the lyricist, catalyst for DMX and Master P and a new LL beef was born.

DMX - Get At Me Dog (90's Flashback)

Classic! Raw! Hip Hop! Where is Dark Man X?

Cam'ron feat. DMX - Pull It (90's Flashback)

Pull It - Camron f Dmx

This is definitely one of my top 5 collabo's of all time.

SNL - Night At The Roxbury (Season 21 May 18, 1996)

This video is a classic and hilarious sketch comedy from SNL. I love Jim Carrey's comedy as well as Will Ferrell's. I want them to do a movie together badly - wishful thinking. If they never do I will always have this hilarious sketch for my viewing pleasure.

My Top 8 Hip Hop Artist To Watch In 2009

I have been listening to a lot of Hip Hop artist lately. I had to research some new talent that I heard on the radio. That is how I have made my decision of my Top anticipated artist in 09:

1. Kanye West

Kanye has been BIG since he began his career as an artist. I feel that he will continue his ascension whether it be as an individual artist or producing them.

2. Jadakiss

Jadakiss has always been a favorite artist of mine and finally it seems like he is in a great situation to provide him with that mainstream success he has been deserving of.

3. Drake

I heard Drake's "Best I Ever Had" track on Hot 97 the other day and I had to research this guy. First off I found that he started as an actor and has had a long career on a Canadian show entitled Degrassi. As far as music he's been doing it since 2006 and has 4 mixtapes out (including the best of mixtape in 2008). I checked them out and need I say more he's number 3 on my list.

4. Kid Cudi

Cudi's music is hot and different. I believe he is definitely what the games been missing. Not to mention he's part of the G.O.O.D. Music family talent gets you a lot of things success is one of them.

5. Rick Ross

Rick's flow is SICK! I am a fan of his wordplay as well. Rick's whole "boss" character is displayed in his demeanor as well as his music.

6. Wale

I first heard Wale on Kid Cudi's "A Kid Named Cudi" mixtape. I then had to checkout this guy who along with Chip Tha Ripper are the only features on that classic mixtape. Wale's own material stands out proving that he can provide Hip Hop with a new form of Energy it needs to survive.

7. Joe Budden

Joey! I am from Jersey City, NJ and so is Joe Budden. Now in Jersey City a lot of people are not particularly fans of Joe Budden. People tend to dislike those who they know personally making their dreams come true before they actually make it. I feel the same way about Joe Budden as I do about Jadakiss he deserves to be on a higher plateau in Hip Hop than he is. With his Joe Budden TV generating a lot of buzz maybe 09 will provide him with that opportunity.

8. Jay-Z

You can't leave out Jay-Z on any top list...lol. He's too great. I am anxiously awaiting the Blueprint 3 album. From the songs that I have heard be it online or on the radio it sounds like a classic. For the people who say Jay should retire I say this if other genres can have artist who are almost 70 still putting out music then why is Hip Hop any different. When Jay-Z is ready to leave then that is when he should leave.
